- If a confirmed ticket is cancelled between 48 hours and up to 12 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, the cancellation charges will be 25% of the total fare paid, subject to the minimum cancellation charges mentioned above.
- If a confirmed ticket is cancelled between 12 hours and up to 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, the cancellation charges will be 50% of the total fare paid, subject to the minimum cancellation charges mentioned above.
Refunds will only be granted on the cancellation of confirmed tickets less than 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train.
Note that the above Irctc cancellation charges are applicable for normal tickets. The cancellation charges for Tatkal tickets are different and more stringent.

If a waitlisted train ticket is cancelled, the cancellation charges collected by Indian Railways depend on the time of cancellation before the scheduled departure of the train. The following are the Irctc cancellation charges for waitlisted tickets:
If a waitlisted ticket is cancelled more than 60 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train, the cancellation charges will be Rs. 60 for AC First Class/Executive Class, Rs. 60 for AC 2 Tier/First Class, Rs. 60 for AC 3 Tier/AC Chair Car/AC 3 Economy, and Rs. 60 for Sleeper Class and Second Class.
No cancellation charges are collected for waitlisted tickets cancelled within 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.
Note that the above cancellation charges are applicable for normal tickets. The cancellation charges for Tatkal tickets are different and more stringent.
IRCTC Cancellation Charges for Wait List Tickets Dropped from Charting
Suppose a waitlisted ticket is dropped from charting. In that case, the ticket is not confirmed even after the preparation of the final passenger chart, the ticket is automatically cancelled, and a refund is processed. No cancellation charges are levied in this case.
The refund amount will be automatically credited to the account used for booking the ticket. The amount refunded will be the fare paid for the ticket after deducting a clerkage charge of Rs. 60 per passenger.
It is important to note that the refund for waitlisted tickets dropped from charting will only be processed automatically if the ticket was booked online. For tickets booked through an offline mode, the passenger needs to submit a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) form to claim a refund.

If the partially cancelled ticket is cancelled more than 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, the cancellation charges will be as follows:
- For AC First Class/Executive Class and AC 2 Tier/First Class, the cancellation charges will be 10% of the fare paid for the passengers who are being cancelled, subject to a minimum charge of Rs. 200 per passenger.
- For AC 3 Tier/AC Chair Car/AC 3 Economy, Sleeper Class and Second Class, the cancellation charges will be 25% of the fare paid for the passengers who are being cancelled, subject to a minimum charge of Rs. 100 per passenger.
If the partially cancelled ticket is cancelled between 48 hours and up to 12 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, the cancellation charges will be 25% of the fare paid for the passengers who are being cancelled, subject to the minimum charges mentioned above.
If the partially cancelled ticket is cancelled between 12 hours and up to 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, the cancellation charges will be 50% of the fare paid for the passengers who are being cancelled, subject to the minimum charges mentioned above.
Refunds will only be granted on the cancellation of a partially cancelled ticket less than 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train.

IRCTC Cancellation Charges for Train Running More than 3 Hours Late and Passenger not travelled
If a train is running more than 3 hours late and the passenger chooses not to travel, the passenger is entitled to a full refund of the fare paid for the ticket, including any service charges or taxes paid. No cancellation charges are collected in this case.
To claim the refund, the passenger needs to file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) with Indian Railways. The TDR needs to be filed within 3 hours after the actual departure of the train from the station where the passenger was supposed to board. If the passenger files the TDR after this period, the refund will be processed per the normal cancellation policy, and charges will apply.
It is important to note that the refund for train delays of more than 3 hours will only be processed if the passenger has not boarded the train. If the passenger has already boarded the train and is running late, the passenger will not be entitled to any refund for the delay.
